Students will complete targeted writing assignments they'll submit through Google Classroom. They will be expected to answer questions weekly, and these will be graded for quality using New York State rubrics for short answers and extended responses. These questions will also deal with ideas and expectations similar to state test question structure, but we also quickly move past them to help them get ready for the high school writing needed for success there.
However, imagine an exponential curve. The year will begin with questions that are more personally reflective about the work, and will gradually increase in rigor and structure as the year progresses ahead of April/May tests dates.
The Writing page will cover the non-research writing that we do in class. As 8th graders, students will be expected to continue their growth with both short answer and essay writing, which is necessary for the 8th Grade ELA exam, as well as written work on Math and Science state tests. Students will be writing in many of their classes (General Music, Social Studies, Technology, and Spanish, as examples) and will begin to learn advanced writing concepts where appropriate
